Ó Ríordáin criticises “ridicolous” decision to cancel Christmas At The Castle

Labour MEP for Dublin Aodhán Ó Ríordáin has criticised the decision to pause the ‘Christmas at the Castle’ in Dublin Castle this year.
Speaking today, Ó Ríordáin said:
“It’s simply ridiculous that the OPW is blaming Ireland’s hosting of the EU Presidency next summer as the reason for cancelling Christmas at the Castle this winter.
“Every year Dubliners, and those from all over Ireland, have enjoyed getting into the festive spirit in the heart of Dublin City. Walking through the historic Dublin Castle with Christmas lights and music has been a really great way to encourage people into the city centre during the festive period. Cancelling the fantastic Christmas market for an event in July of next year just beggars belief.
“As well as those hoping to get into the festive spirit, the markets offered our craftspeople an opportunity to showcase their designs and give the gift of Irish made gifts to our loved ones.
“There’s no joined up thinking from the OPW. Christmas at the Castle has been a huge success since its opening in 2019. As a city, we should be doing more to encourage people into the city centre, to experience all that our city has to offer, to provide craftspeople and small businesses the opportunity to showcase their wears and to spread some Christmas magic for children and families.
“The OPW must rethink this decision. I am calling on Minister of State Moran to intervene and let common sense prevail in Dublin this Christmas.
