Boylan welcomes ban for toxic chemicals in children’s toys

Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has welcomed an agreement on new rules for toy safety across the EU.

The Dublin MEP said “these new rules will see PFAS “forever chemicals” and many dangerous bisphenols banned from children’s toys.”
“PFAS and bisphenols cause many health problems including cancers, immune system disorders and developmental delays for children, as well as a host of other serious conditions. These chemicals have absolutely no place in children’ toys.
“I was one of the negotiators for this new law and was happy that some of our main priorities for protecting children were included in the final agreement.
Boylan said “while this is a great step, we have more work to do and I’m determined to press the EU to have other dangerous and toxic chemicals banned from children’s toys in the future.”
“These negotiations were difficult, and at some points it unfortunately looked like the EU would give priority to corporate concerns, rather than the safety of children.
“I welcome that MEPs came together from across party lines on an issue that matters so much. Protecting the health of children must always be a priority for all of us,” she said.
