McCabe signs contract extension with Arsenal

Republic of Ireland captain Katie McCabe has signed a new contract at Arsenal, the club have announced.

The Kilnamanagh native has made 193 appearances for the Gunners and has scored 31 goals since joining them in December 2015.

Her previous deal had been set to expire next summer and it is understood that Arsenal rejected a “substantial” transfer bid from rivals Chelsea in January this year.

McCabe has helped Arsenal win the 2019 WSL title, one FA Cup and two League Cups during her time at the club, and recently established herself as one of Ireland’s biggest sporting personalities following her performances at the Women’s World Cup.

Her performances at the tournament helped secure her spot on the 2023 Ballon D’Or shortlist, with her goal against Canada marking the first-ever goal by the Irish team at the tournament.

Rumours have circulated in the Irish media that a row broke out between Katie McCabe and manager Vera Pauw at the tournament and that played a significant factor in Pauw not having her contract renewed, but McCabe denied this was the case.

“I feel like there have been a few unfair headlines. This thing of ‘Katie v Vera’ is not a thing. We have spoken and she has wished us well. I will always be grateful for what Vera has given to Irish football,” she said ahead of Ireland’s most recent fixtures in the Nations League.

McCabe, who is on the 2023 Ballon d’Or shortlist, said “Arsenal is home for me and I’m excited to have committed my future to this football club.”

“I’ve grown up here as a player and a person and developed a really special bond with our supporters, which means a lot to me.

“Over the years, I’ve experienced some amazing moments here – but I believe that the best is yet to come and I know the aim here at Arsenal is to compete for the highest honours.”

Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall said “Katie McCabe brings us so much on and off the pitch, so we are delighted to say that she has signed a new contract here with us.”

“She has been one of the top performers in world football over the past few years and her quality and character are integral to what we do here.”

“We were very proud to see how she stepped up as captain when called upon last season and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together moving forward.”
