Dublin City Councillor Catherine Stocker has today announced her intention to contest the upcoming Seanad bye-election in the University of Dublin constituency.
A graduate of Trinity College Dublin, Stocker was elected to Dublin City Council in 2019 as a Social Democrats representative for the Clontarf.

She says she will run as an Independent candidate.

Confirming her candidacy for the Seanad race Stocker said: “It is clear we have much to do to provide a fair and just society in Ireland.

“This must start with changing how we do politics.

“I believe I can be a clear and strong voice in the Seanad to drive the change that is urgently needed.

“I want to drive a politics that is progressive and compassionate; a politics based on social solidarity not on division and shoring up vested interests.

“It has been a privilege to both study and work in Trinity College and it would be an absolute privilege to represent the University of Dublin Constituency in the Seanad.”

Gary Gannon TD, a Trinity Access Programme graduate and Social Democrats spokesperson on Education and Higher Education, said that Stocker “represents the very best of what I know Trinity to be.

“She’s passionate about positive change, whether it be in housing, justice or educational equality.

“She brings a huge depth of knowledge to her activism.

“She would make a wonderful senator and I’ll be proud to vote for Catherine for the Seanad.”
