Iarnród Éireann recruiting for craftworker roles at two busy Dublin depots

Iarnród Éireann is recruiting for Electrical and Mechanical Craftworker roles at its two busiest Dublin-based fleet maintenance sites, Inchicore and Fairview.

Significant expansion plans have brought the requirement to further invest in new roles, which bring the opportunity to build a career as Iarnród Éireann develops its fleet and services in the years ahead.

Inchicore

The Inchicore site, celebrating its 175th anniversary, is a modern remanufacturing facility employing approximately 500 staff and is the main engineering headquarters for Iarnród Éireann.

Highly skilled craftworker teams are responsible for the repair and overhaul of Rolling Stock and major components at the following workshops and depots on site:

  • Wheel Shop – Precision Remanufacture of wheelsets and transmissions through various Mechanical and CNC Engineering processes on all Irish Rail fleets
  • Bogie Shop – Remanufacture of vehicle bogies and associated Mechanical and Electrical bogie components on all Irish Rail fleets
  • Fleet Carriage Repair Shop- Major overhaul of Carriages
  • Paint Shop – Repainting complete carriages
  • Wheel Lathe –Wheel machining on vehicles
  • Running Shed – routine maintenance of Locomotives and MKIV Carriages
  • Locomotive Overhaul – Major overhaul of Locomotives and main engines

The first five workshops complete the necessary overhaul and refurbishment works for all Iarnród Éireann fleets nationwide, while the Running Shed is dedicated to the maintenance of 41 Diesel Engine Locomotives and 67 Carriages. The Locomotive Overhaul shop is responsible for overhauling the locomotives major systems such as engines and pneumatics.

Dart Maintenance Fairview

A team of 45 Iarnród Éireann staff and specialised contractors complete all tasks required to present clean, safe and reliable Dart trains on the network.

The fleet consists of 144 cars which receive their power directly via the 1500 V Overhead line to the roof mounted pantograph on the train. The Dart itself comprises of two main fleets (i) 76 x 8100 cars introduced into service in 1984 with major mid-life refurbishment between 2006 and 2008 and (ii) 68 x 8500 cars introduced into service from 2001.

Fairview will play a major role in Iarnród Éireann’s Dart+ Programme, being responsible for providing maintenance support to the newly delivered Electric and Battery-electric powered vehicles from 2025, which will replace the older 8100 fleet. This new Dart+ fleet will be the largest and most sustainable public transport fleet in Irish history

Each location has highly skilled craftworker teams consisting of Electricians, Fitters, Mechanics and Coachbuilder – Bodymakers who are trained to provide the range of multi-skilled competencies required to undertake all aspects of modern train maintenance and overhaul. Duties include routine running maintenance and servicing, defect repairs, modifications and heavy maintenance overhaul across the full range of specialist high tech systems on the fleet including diesel engines, transmissions, electrical, pneumatic, bogies & wheelsets

The in-house maintenance teams at both sites are supported by Train Technical Specialists, Remote Diagnostics, and Production Planning. On site Safety and Facilities management ensures the safe and efficient operation of the facilities and the welfare of staff and visitors.

Lean management and Continuous Improvement is core to the operation of Iarnród Éireann facilities and International Best Practice is evident throughout. Both sites regularly host international visitors for maintenance and knowledge sharing. Iarnród Éireann are also notable trend setters in this industry and were also the first to be accredited with the new EU Entity in Charge of Maintenance for Passenger Rolling Stock Fleets
