Apprenticeship schemes need to be ramped up for women, says DCC councillor

Dublin City Council is falling behind in its effort to offer apprenticeships – particularly to women, according to Independent councillor Noeleen Reilly.

Speaking today, Reilly said that “since the start of the Apprenticeship Programme in 2018 there has only been thirty apprenticeships schemes progressed.

“This is a very poor reflection given the size and scope of Dublin City Council.

“Also at a time when there is a huge shortage in the construction sector where many companies are struggling to find workers,” she says.

“Dublin City Council is forever having to outsource work as it doesn’t have the employees to carry it out.

“Increasing numbers would be a win win for Dublin City Council.”

Reilly says that the gender disparity with those taking up the apprenticeships is stark, and more needs to be done to help bring more women into the programme.

“There is also very clearly an issue when it comes to the recruitment of women for apprenticeship roles with only 10% of the meagre total amount being filled by women.

“I want to see this change and I believe there needs to be a dedicated campaign to support women becoming carpenters, electricians or plumbers.

“The Government claim to support apprenticeships but why aren’t they supporting local authorities when it comes to implementing theirs.

“Incentives have been given to private companies which is welcome but nothing for local authorities.

“The apprenticeships schemes for local authorities need to be overhauled and funding given to hire and train people in areas which is badly needed”.
