A Dublin City Council survey has revealed that over 80% of people are within a 15 minute walk or cycle to most essential services and amenities.

This means that Dublin has many of the attributes of a 15 Minute City – a city where the majority of the inhabitants are at most 15 minutes away from important services.

The survey, ‘Your Dublin Your Voice’, was conducted as part of the consultation phase for the new City Development Plan 2022-2028 and attracted over 1,000 respondents, according to the council.

“It showed that 80% or more respondents were within 15 minutes of parks, sports facilities, schools, supermarkets, post offices, banks, restaurants and pubs.

“The outlier was work places with only 27% within active commuting distance.

“There is also widespread recognition that the promotion of active transport is crucial for Dublin with 61% selecting walking and cycling infrastructure as key priority areas.

“However, public transport improvements were seen as most important with over 70% selecting these as their top priority.”

The council says that most respondents said that housing remains the “top issue facing the city with affordable housing selected as the top priority in this area, followed by tackling homelessness.”

Deirdre Scully, Deputy City Planner said: “The benefits of the 15 Minute City have been gaining recognition internationally as cities look to the future.

“While the survey findings show that Dublin has many positives on this front, further work will be required over the coming years to make the city a better place to live, work and enjoy.”
