Dublin’s film industry had a lot to celebrate with this year’s Oscar nominations.
Super producer Ed Guiney, previously nominated in Best Picture for Room, The Favourite and Poor Things, secured his 4th nomination for the black comedy Bugonia.
Guiney’s producing partner, Andrew Lowe, who was nominated alongside Guiney for Poor Things in 2024, also received a nomination for his production work on Bugonia.
Guiney and Lowe are the founders of Element Pictures, also behind TV hits such as Normal People, and are the owners of Dublin’s Lighthouse Cinema.
The thriller, which sees conspiracy theorists kidnap the CEO of a major pharmaceutical company, marks the sixth collaboration between Guiney and Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos.
The film also received nominations for Best Actress for Emma Stone, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score.
2-time winner Richard Baneham looks certain to add to his trophy cabinet as his visual effects work on Avatar: Fire And Ash received a nomination.
Baneham, who won for his work on the original Avatar film in 2009 and the 2022 sequel The Way Of Water, was upgraded to executive producer for his work on the James Cameron blockbusters, with Baneham playing a key role as visual effects supervisor.
The Richard Linklater film Blue Moon, which documents the creative struggles of Lorenz Hart on the opening night of the musical Oklahoma, received two nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor for Ethan Hawke.
Blue Moon was shot in Dublin, and co-stars Dubliner Andrew Scott.
Dubliner John Kelly received a nomination in the category of Best Animated Short for his short film, Retirement Plan.
The Domhnall Gleeson-starring short film documents a middle-aged man dreaming about his life after retirement, and won the Grand Jury Award at last year’s SXSW festival in the United States.
The nominations, revealed on January 22, saw some highlights and lowlights for Irish stars; Kerry woman Jessie Buckley continued her march to Best Actress for her role in Hamnet, while Kildare’s Paul Mescal missed out for his performance as William Shakespeare.
Vampire drama Sinners, which features Rocky Road To Dubin in a key sequence, was the big nominee this year, securing a record 16 nominations.
The 98th Academy Awards will take place on March 15.
