SIPTU welcomes RTÉ decision on Eurovision boycott

SIPTU has welcomed the RTÉ announcement that it will not participate in the Eurovision Song Contest if Israel is included, saying that it removes the threat of Irish media workers having to deal with a country which is committing a genocide.

SIPTU Services Divisional Organiser, Adrian Kane, said: “RTÉ has taken a principled and courageous position which reflects the deep concern felt by workers and communities across Ireland at the appalling humanitarian crisis in Gaza. This decision is consistent with the strong tradition of solidarity in Irish society and with our Union’s earlier calls for cultural institutions to act when fundamental human rights are being trampled upon.

“The targeting of journalists, the suppression of truth and the ongoing loss of civilian life cannot be ignored. By refusing to normalise participation in events that would whitewash such actions, RTÉ has sent a clear message that culture carries responsibilities as well as opportunities.”

Kane added: “This stance must now be matched by others. In particular our Government, which should lead a ‘coalition of the wiling’ in pushing for the EU to severe all economic, cultural and sporting links with a State that is committing a genocide.

“We are calling on cultural organisations, sporting bodies and national institutions to also consider following RTÉ’s lead. Non-violent acts of solidarity such as cultural and sporting boycotts have historically been powerful tools in the struggle against injustice. It is time for Irish institutions to step up and ensure they are not complicit in normalising grave human rights violations.

“SIPTU will continue to advocate for action that upholds international law and protects the rights of all workers and communities affected by this crisis.”
