Here are the best films playing in Dublin this weekend – May 3rd-6th
Mike Finnerty 03 May 2024The start of summer is here (depending on what version of the Irish calender you believe) which means it is high time to head to the cinema.
This weekend has the decency to be a bank holiday weekend which means an extra day of movie-going.
The summer blockbuster season starts off with The Fall Guy, an adaptation of the 80s TV show of the same name.
Lee Majors has been swapped out for Ryan Gosling which can be considered a decent upgrade.
In the movie, we see Gosling at his silly best, and has cracking chemistry with his co-star Emily Blunt.
Our review said the film was big, dumb and fun, and while it won’t quite be an action movie revolution like Furiousa will be later this month, it’s still a decent crowd-pleaser to fire the starting gun on the summer season of movies.
The movie will be playing in cinemas both big and small by virtue of being this weeks big Hollywood release.
We are double-dipping on our recommendation to see Challengers.
The new Luca Guadagnino film is on track to be one of the critical darlings of the year and has managed to dominate online discussion since it came out.
We had a terrific time with the film, saying it “seamlessly blends together arthouse sensibilities and popcorn delight.”
A24’s latest offering, Loves Lies Bleeding, sees Kirsten Stewart continue to spearhead a film that would otherwise never get made and it has a decidedly uncommercial premise – a gym manager and a bodybuilder get entwined in a lesbian crime story.
From British director Rose Glass, who’s 2019 film Saint Maud was a real shock to the system, the film will be playing in cinemas across Dublin this weekend.
Catch it while you can though – A24 films don’t tend to stick around for very long.
The Stella in Rathmines continues its Spielberg season with two juggernauts on Saturday; Jurassic Park and Jaws.
Both films benefit from being seen on a big screen, and now is your chance to catch Spielberg at his very best (and weep at the fact Spielberg was 27 when he made Jaws…). Both films will play on Saturday on Sunday.
