MetroLink seeks local input

How the tunnel intervention shaft would look in Albert College Park.

NORTHSIDERS are being asked for their views on a ‘tunnel intervention shaft’ that needs be developed within the grounds of Albert College Park in Glasnevin as part of the MetroLink rail project.

The preferred route for the ambitious project – which will finally see a rail link between the city and Swords, to include Dublin Airport – was published in March 2019. Transport Infrastructure Ireland intends to submit a Railway Order application for the scheme to An Bord Pleanála towards the end of this year, with work anticipated to commence in 2022.

In response to request from residents for further information, MetroLink has initiated a local area consultation to explain in more detail the function and need for the so-called intervention shaft at Albert College Park.

A spokesperson for MetroLink said that where the distance between stations is greater than 1km, there is a need to provide a tunnel intervention shaft. The proposed stations at Collins Avenue and Griffith Park will be 1,494m apart.

The shaft is needed to allow emergency services to access the underground system and provides a safe route for passengers to escape from the tunnel. In addition, it assists in controlling/managing smoke extraction in emergency situations, as well as providing ventilation for passenger comfort in normal day-to-day operations.

The finished site at Albert College Park will include: a building that will provide emergency access/egress stairs for passenger evacuation; dedicated lifts for Dublin Fire Brigade access; and tunnel ventilation equipment and systems.

Vehicular access will be provided off the Ballymun Road for emergency vehicles and routine maintenance. Parking facilities will also be provided to accommodate emergency services vehicles in the event of an incident and for the attendance of maintenance vehicles when necessary.

The boundary of the tunnel intervention shaft will be secure and the finished area will be appropriately landscaped to incorporate it into the local environment.

All local feedback received will help Transport Infrastructure Ireland finalise designs before it submits a planning application to An Bord Pleanála.

The consultation will close on Thursday, March 12, at 5pm.
