Doolan welcomes funding for People’s Park in Cherry Orchard

Local Sinn Féin councillor Daithí Doolan has welcomed news that a People’s Park is being developed in Cherry Orchard.

This week, it was announced that Cherry Orchard will receive €9 million in funding from the Town and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund.

Ballyfermot-Drimnagh councillor Daithí Doolan welcomed the news, saying it is a “major step forward” for a park in the Cherry Orchard area.

“With 68% of Cherry Orchard’s population being under the age of 40 this community urgently need a fully developed people’s park,” the Sinn Féin councillor said.

“This transformative and exciting project aims to completely reinvent the eight-hectare green space into a thriving public realm centrepiece. It will have something for all ages and abilities.

Doolan explained, “the park is being built to cater for everyone, turning plain grass fields into a vibrant community hub.  Sports are at the heart of the project, with a 400-metre running track and one-kilometre loop catering to serious runners and casual walkers alike.  This plan will include a new 400-metre running track, a 1 kilometre trail, a high-performance grass pitch, and an all-weather kickabout area.”

The park will also biodiversity areas with over 500 new trees, wetlands, and woodland trails.

“The community will be at the “centre of these plans” with a new amphitheatre for school and community events, along with stepped seating surrounding the all-weather pitch to host outdoor cinema and festivals

“This really is great news for Cherry Orchard.  With the funding now guaranteed work can start as soon as possible with anticipated completion in early 2029,” Doolan said.
