O’Driscoll encourages DLR residents to have say on LPT

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has opened its annual consultation on whether to vary the Local Property Tax (LPT) rate for 2027,.

Fine Gael councillor Eoin O’Driscoll is urging residents to make a submission — before it closes on 4 September – so that their views are duly taken into account.

The Council has applied the maximum 15% downward adjustment to LPT every year since 2022, and Fine Gael councillors have voted for the reduction each time it has come before the Council.

Councillor O’Driscoll said, “Fine Gael has backed the maximum reduction every time it’s been put to this Council, and I’ll be doing the same again this year.”

“Homeowners in this county already carry a disproportionate tax burden, and Council spending — up by nearly 50% over the last term alone — shows that we can pay for improved services without placing undue burden on local homeowners,” he said.

“I do not see any justification for increasing the tax burden on homeowners in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown for 2027 and will be voting to retain the full 15% downwards adjustment.

“This consultation is the one formal opportunity residents get each year to weigh in before the Council decides on 12 October. If you want to see the 15% reduction kept in place for 2027, or if you have a different view, I’d encourage you to say so — it takes a few minutes, and every submission is read before the vote is taken.”

Councillor O’Driscoll added, “It is unfortunate that this consultation takes place over the summer. The response rate is usually very low, severely reducing the consultation’s utility as a gauge of public opinion. Therefore, I would encourage everyone to have their voice heard before the 4th September deadline on what is an extremely impactful decision by your local representatifves.”
