Two much-loved sports facilities on Dublin’s southside could be swept into future housing plans, and a local councillor is drawing a firm line in the sand.

Cllr Pierce Dargan, a County Councillor for Glencullen – Sandyford ward, has pledged to oppose proposals by Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council that would see Jamestown Pitch & Putt Course and Stepaside Golf Centre and Driving Range placed into a long-term strategic landbank, a move he says threatens vital community amenities under a proposed variation to the County Development Plan 2022–2028.

The proposed variation would allow certain lands to be earmarked for potential future residential development.

Among the sites identified are Jamestown Pitch & Putt Course and Stepaside Golf Centre and Driving Range, facilities that play a crucial role in recreation, wellbeing, and community life in the Dublin Mountains area.

Cllr. Dargan has confirmed he does not support the inclusion of these lands in the strategic landbank and will be bringing forward a motion to have them removed and replaced with alternative sites that are equally suitable for development.

“These facilities are vital local amenities that support physical activity, mental wellbeing, and community connection for people of all ages,” Cllr. Dargan said.

“Our area has already experienced significant residential development, and it is essential that existing amenities are protected rather than sacrificed.”

Since 2016, the local ward has seen more housing built than any other ward, placing increased pressure on existing infrastructure and recreational facilities.

Cllr. Dargan argues that future planning must strike a better balance between housing delivery and the protection of community amenities.

“We need more amenities to match our growing population not fewer.

“I will do everything I can to ensure these important facilities are protected for current residents and future generations while we also deliver on our housing targets.”

Cllr. Dargan is encouraging residents and community groups to make their voices heard and support efforts to retain these much-valued local amenities through the public consultation which is happening until January 26th 2026.
