Plans for new station at Kylemore unveiled

Dublin People 08 Sep 2025

Iarnród Éireann has unveiled details of its plan to develop a new rail station in the Kylemore area of Dublin, on the Heuston Commuter line.

The proposed station is located to the west of Kylemore Road Bridge, between ParkWest and Heuston Stations, and the company today launched a period of non-statutory consultation on the project, which will run until 3rd October next.

Funded by the Department of Transport, through the National Transport Authority, the new station which is included in the NTA’s GDA Transport Strategy 2022-2042, will provide rail access for the existing 16,000 residents, who live within 1km of the proposed station, as well as the future planned South Dublin County Council and Dublin City Council City Edge project, which will bring up to 40,000 new homes and up to 75,000 jobs to the area.

The station will provide access to direct and frequent services to Dublin city centre.  Additional opportunities to access services to the south and west of the country, including Cork, Limerick and Galway, will also be provided via the planned new station at Heuston West, which will be constructed as part of the DART+ South West Project.

Information is available to view at www.irishrail.ie/new-stations/kylemore. An in person public consultation event will take place at Ballyfermot Library on Thursday, 11th September from 16:00hrs to 20:00hrs, all are welcome.

Services on this line currently run between Portlaoise and Heuston and between Newbridge and Grand Canal Dock via the Phoenix Park tunnel. During the public consultation for the DART+ South West project – which will boost frequency and capacity of services on the route – a significant number of local residents requested that the development of a new station at Kylemore be included as part of the DART+ SouthWest project. Iarnród Éireann has taken this feedback on board and following a feasibility study this represents the first stage in the development of a new rail station in Kylemore.

Subject to planning permission being granted and the availability of funding, construction of the new station at Kylemore will be delivered in conjunction with the DART+ Programme works.

Located to the west of Kylemore Road bridge, the new station will provide access to fast, frequent and sustainable public transport for existing and future communities. The DART+ programme will deliver up to 23 services an hour each way on this route, subject to demand and separate public consultation on the timetable in conjunction with the National Transport Authority. The station will also provide interchange opportunities with the BusConnects S4 orbital route, the number 60 and the G routes with the closest bus stop being only 110 metres away. The station is also well placed to integrate with future Luas connections and planned active travel networks.

Following an assessment of this public consultation, Iarnród Éireann plans to commence work on a planning application in early 2026.

Speaking at the launch of the information campaign, Jim Meade, Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann said: “The provision of this new station at Kylemore demonstrates the power of public consultation. The public spoke and we listened. This station will provide excellent connectivity for the current residents of Ballyfermot and the future residents and workers of the City Edge area. The provision of a station at this area demonstrates excellent future planning for the development that will happen in this area”

Eoin Gillard, Director of Public Transport Investment at the National Transport Authority said “The proposed Kylemore station is a vital step in delivering sustainable, accessible transport options for communities in west Dublin. This project will enhance connectivity for existing communities and support the future growth envisaged under the City Edge initiative. Public consultation plays a vital role in shaping transport projects to meet the needs of the people they serve. I strongly encourage the local communities to engage with the consultation process and contribute their views.”

Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien said: “The proposed development of a new train station at Kylemore is an example of the Government’s commitment to broadening access to the public transport network. A station at Kylemore will provide convenient access to the rail network for the residents of the Ballyfermot area, and  also provide an integrated transport link to the future City Edge housing development. I encourage everyone to engage with this public consultation”.

Minister of State with responsibility for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, Séan Canney, said: “I am delighted to see the progress being made on Kylemore station. Adding new rail stations and upgrading existing ones will play a key role in broadening access to the rail network and implementing the vision set out in the All-Island Strategic Rail Review.”
