Crowe criticises racist attack in Tallaght

A racist attack in Tallaght over the weekend, where an Indian national was attacked after being falsely identified, has been criticised by local TD Seán Crowe.

Sinn Féin TD Seán Crowe said, “there is no place for that in Ireland, and that anyone saying that this type of violent behaviour is somehow protecting their community is fooling no one.”

The attack took place on Saturday evening when an Indian national in his 40s after being accused of “acting inappropriately,” a charge which has been dismissed by Gardaí.

Gardaí have stated that the injured man, who remains in hospital with serious injuries, was “wrongly targeted.”

Crowe said the assault was “vile and utterly unacceptable on so many levels. An individual going about their day was set upon and now faces life altering injuries simply because of the colour of his skin.”

“Anyone that thinks this sort of mindless, racist violence makes their community safer is lying and fooling no one. Some residents are increasingly nervous to leave their homes due to this type of behaviour, regardless if they are new arrivals to our community or have lived here all their lives.”

“I condemn this attack entirely and call on anyone with any information relating to this incident to reach out to the garda authorities. This is not the first such attack in our area, but it has to be the last.

“My message to the young men who carried out this vicious attack is this; you’re not a patriot. You’re certainly not standing up for women and children. You are sowing hate, fear, and division in communities that have suffered more than enough from a lack of resources from the government, and not some innocent resident trying to make a life here.”
