Dundrum can’t become Wild West of drones, says local TD

A proposed drone delivery hub in Dundrum has sparked concern from Fianna Fáil TD Shay Brennan, who is urging local residents to speak up now, before the skies above their neighbourhood become a commercial flight path.
Manna Drones Ltd has submitted an application to Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council for an aerial food delivery hub at the rear of Main Street, close to Holy Cross Church.
Deputy Brennan welcomed the potential of drone technology to create jobs and boost local businesses but stressed the need for careful planning and community input.
“I fully support innovation and I want to see Irish companies thrive, but we cannot allow drone delivery hubs to pop up unchecked, without listening to those who will be most affected. We need a clear plan that protects our community’s peace, privacy, and safety.”
He warned that without proper safeguards, drone delivery could bring constant noise from low-flying devices over homes, schools, and community spaces; invade the privacy of residents as drones pass over gardens and properties; and create safety risks in areas not designed for such activity, all while regulation struggles to keep up.
“This is a fast-moving industry, and that’s why it’s vital we have transparent processes where residents can have their voices heard.
“I’m calling for a formal public consultation so we can shape solutions that work for both business and community.
“It’s fantastic to see an Irish company like Manna leading the way in drone technology.
“I’d love to see more Irish entrepreneurs driving innovation in this sector, they are shaping the future, and we should be proud to back them, however we must strike a balance.
“This is common with new technology, the innovation arrives first, and the laws follow after. That’s why we need to get ahead of this now, not after problems arise.”
Deputy Brennan urged residents to engage with the planning process while it is still open and stressed that decisions taken now will set the tone for how drone technology develops in urban areas across the country.
“Let’s embrace new technology, but let’s do it responsibly,” he said.
“This can’t be a scattergun approach.
“It’s about balance, fairness, and protecting the quality of life for residents.”
