Heroes of the community honoured at County Hall

They are the quiet heroes behind the scenes, the ones who give their time, energy and heart to make life better for others.

And last week, their efforts were formally celebrated as Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council held its annual Cathaoirleach’s Awards at County Hall.

The 2025 ceremony, hosted by Cllr Jim O’Leary, Cathaoirleach of the Council (pictured above), shone a spotlight on a diverse and inspiring group of volunteers from every corner of the county.

From first responders and Irish language champions to advocates for older citizens and local entrepreneurs, the awardees were recognised for their extraordinary contributions to community life.

“These awards shine a light on the exceptional efforts of individuals who dedicate their time, energy, and expertise to bettering their communities,” said Cllr O’Leary.

“Their commitment enriches the lives of so many across Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, and we are deeply grateful for their service.”

The tone of the evening was one of warmth, gratitude and pride.

In a world often dominated by headlines of hardship, the awards offered a welcome reminder of the power of kindness, connection and civic spirit.

Among those honoured were individuals supporting older people in their neighbourhoods, volunteers working with new communities to support integration, and leaders who have kept the flame of Irish culture alive through language and music.

Others were acknowledged for their quick-thinking responses in times of emergency and their tireless commitment to helping those in need.

Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, said the ceremony highlighted a vital relationship between the Council and its communities.

“These awards recognise not only the incredible work of volunteers and leaders, but also the spirit of partnership between our communities and the Council,” he said.

“Together, we continue to build a vibrant, inclusive, and supportive place to live and work.”

Now a firm fixture in the county calendar, the Cathaoirleach’s Awards serve as an annual tribute to the quiet strength of community life – and to the people who, without seeking recognition, continue to make an extraordinary difference.
