The Canal communities of Bluebell, Dolphin’s Barn, Inchicore and Dublin 8, launched a major initiative to reduce the harm caused by alcohol in local communities.
Sinn Féin councillor Daithí Doolan, who attended the launch, said “I was delighted to attend the launch of Building SAFER Communities. This is a major initiative supported by the Canals Local Drug and Alcohol Task Force, the HSE, Gardaí and Community Action on Alcohol.”

“Building SAFER Communities is a genuine community based response to the harm caused by alcohol particularly to our young people,” he said.

“Building SAFER Communities, is based on the World Health Organisations (WHO) SAFER package of high impact policy measures to reduce and prevent alcohol harm. Over the next three years, this project will be delivered in 12 communities in Ireland, supported by seven local and regional Drug and Alcohol Task Forces, including Canals Communities Local Drug and Alcohol Task force.   This scheme supports the strengthening the prevention of drug and alcohol use and associated harms among children and young people in Ireland.”

The Ballyfermot-Drimnagh councillor said “the finding of the local research carried out by the local drug task force was startling. 22.6% of those surveyed had family problems or relationship difficulties due to alcohol and 11.8% had financial trouble because of someone else’s drinking.”

“It is very clear that alcohol is having dangerous effects on individuals, families, and the wider community. The response must also be community based and focused on improving the quality of lives for people and their families.”

“The launch was a very positive event, promoting healthy alternatives and celebrating recovery. We had the Recovery Choir, the Dolphin House choir and leading experts including Dr. Aisling Sheehan from the HSE and Anne Doyle from the Health Research Board outlining the level of harm and damage done by alcohol and highlighting what can be done to reduce this damage.”
