Senator Aubrey McCarthy has been officially appointed to the influential Oireachtas Housing, Local Government committee.

The independent Senator was elected to the Seanad in January via the Trinity College Dublin constituency.

McCarthy said “the housing and homelessness crisis is the most pressing issue of our time. We need a whole of government approach to fixing it. My primary focus in the coming months on this committee will be, homelessness, wrap around supports and focusing on children in homelessness and appropriate housing.”

Throughout his career, Senator McCarthy has been a vocal advocate for homeless people and people dealing with addiction with his charity Tiglin, feeding up to 500 people per night on Dublin’s Pearse St. His leadership, insight, and collaborative approach will be invaluable as the committee navigates key housing policies and initiatives.

Senator McCarthy says he “looks forward to engaging with the minister, his officials and all stakeholders, policymakers, and community representatives to drive meaningful change and advance housing reforms that benefit all citizens”. His appointment marks a significant step toward a more inclusive and forward-thinking approach to housing policy.

“Housing should not be seen as a privilege, and we should all work together to eliminate homelessness,” he said.
