Geoghegan calls for Luas to be extended to Ringsend and Irishtown

The Minister for Transport must fast-track plans for the extension of the Luas Red Line from The Point through Ringsend and Irishtown, a Fine Gael TD has said.

Dublin Bay South TD James Geoghegan said, “we need some common sense and joined-up thinking when it comes to delivering public transport in Dublin.”

The Fine Gael TD noted, “a major new bridge is already planned as part of Dublin Port’s 3FM expansion, with construction expected to begin by 2027. It would be madness not to integrate the Luas extension into this project rather than trying to retrofit a solution years later at a far greater cost to the taxpayer.”

Geoghegan said the extension of the Luas should coincide with the Southern Port Access Route, and said this “presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver the Luas extension in a cost-effective and efficient manner.”

He added,d “we know that up to 10,000 more people will be moving into the Poolbeg area in the coming years. Infrastructure must come first, not last. The Minister should act now to ensure taxpayers aren’t footing a far higher bill down the line when this extension inevitably has to be built anyway.”

“We have a proven track record in delivering major Luas infrastructure on time and on budget.”

He said that the Luas project (“which was far more complex, he said) was delivered on time and within budget over 20 years ago, and now enables 10 million passenger journeys per year.

“There is no reason why the Ringsend/Irishtown extension cannot be progressed with the same efficiency and ambition.”

“Beyond Ringsend and Irishtown, we need wider strategic benefits for Dublin commuters,” he said.

“This extension would provide a key transport connection to Heuston Station, and it would be just a short walk from Grand Canal Dock DART station, enhancing overall connectivity across the city.

“With the National Development Plan review set to conclude this summer, the Minister for Transport and the NTA need to accelerate the ongoing appraisal process and seize this opportunity.”

“We cannot afford to make the mistakes of the past, building homes first and then scrambling to deliver public transport solutions years later. The time to act is now.”
