Independent councillor Francis Timmons has called on South Dublin County Council to limit election posters.
Timmons, who was recently re-elected to South Dublin County Council (and making a point of not using posters during his election campaign) said “this is the one area we as a council could lead on with regards to climate change.”
“We are in a climate emergency and we must act to do anything we can as elected member; if we are serious about climate change we must act.”
“We are limited as a council on what we can do but this is one area we could as a council lead on”
He said that the use of cable ties along with mass waste after each election should be enough to make people act and “come up with alternatives.”
“Please email all councillors and let your views be known – I also took down a lot of one-use cable ties that candidates had left on poles after they removed their posters even though I didn’t use any posters in the recent election.”
“We really need to get rid of one-use cable ties in particular,” he added.
He said in future elections, there should be designated poster area zones, in consultation with Tidy Town Groups, be it billboard or electronic.
The elimination of one-use cable ties and poster waste would show “real leadership,” in his view.
