De Nortúin calls for reinstatement of eviction ban as Dublin homeless figures hit 10,000
Dublin People 29 Mar 2024People Before Profit Dublin City Councillor Hazel De Nortúin has called on the government to reinstate the eviction ban in light of the latest record-breaking homelessness figures released by the Department of Housing today.
Councillor De Nortúin said “the figures show that the number of homeless people in Dublin has exceeded 10,000 for the first time. Within that there are 3,165 homeless children in the Dublin area. That’s thousands of young lives blighted by the trauma of homelessness. This is a Government-made crisis and a national scandal”.
The latest national figures show that 13,841 people across the State are now homeless, also a new record high, of which 4,170 are children.
Councillor De Nortúin said “the Government must reimpose the eviction ban as an emergency measure and use the period of a renewed ban to build public and affordable housing on public land on a massive scale. A state construction company needs to be established and scaled-up as quickly as possible to directly build the public and affordable homes that the private market has not and will never deliver”.
