Sinn Féin’s representative in Dublin Rathdown Shaun Tracey this week supported a public demonstration at the Samuel Beckett Civic Centre in support of the retention of the gym there and to call for the long planned swimming pool to be built.

Mr Tracey called on local councillors to support the campaign to retain the gym and build the pool.

“The decision to close the gym to make way for a library has upset a lot of people in the local community,” he said.

“Our understanding is that the gym will be re-opened in the new building that will house the swimming pool but council cannot provide us with any timeframe for the delivery of this project.

“And the community has been waiting for the swimming pool to be built for about twenty years now so the fear is that once it’s closed it is not coming back.

“Therefore, the demand is that the gym should stay put until the new building is built and that’s why the slogan for today’s demonstration was ‘Save Our Gym, Build Our Pool’.

“It’s about time we heard from our local councillors in Glencullen/Sandyford on this matter.

“They have the ability to put a motion to the full Council to seek the retention of the gym and I am calling on them to do just that.”
