Councillors vote to progress with construction of Shanganagh Park sport facilities

Gary Ibbotson 10 May 2022

Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown councillors voted to proceed with developing Shanganagh Park sporting facilities at this month’s full council meeting.

The vote was carried by 38 votes in favour with one vote against and one absention.

The council will now apply for planning permission for the scheme through the Part 8 planning process.

Fine Gael councillor John Kennedy welcomed the decision,.

“The proposed development will include floodlit pitches and a 100 metre sprint track with other facilities benefiting GAA, soccer, baseball, cricket and athletics,” he said.

“There is a pressing need for such facilities county-wide and such a need will increase in the local community once further social housing implemented by the LDA in Shanganagh.

“There were voices both in favour and others against the proposal as was clear during the public consultation, with a call during the meeting to defer a decision on the facilities, but on balance the councillors were correct not to defer the significant investment involved in delivering these much needed sporting facilities.

“The council will also be planting many trees in tandem with the development which should allay concerns raised by residents regarding overall biodiversity in the park,” he says.
