Sandymount Green to be pedestrianised following Dublin City Council vote

Padraig Conlon 15 Feb 2022

A proposal from Dublin City Council to extend the pedestrianisation of the eastern part of Sandymount Green from Easter until Halloween this year has been approved by elected councillors.

Speaking following the vote, Fine Gael Councillor James Geoghegan said:

“This proposal has widespread support from across the community and amongst elected councillors.

“It proves that even as we return to indoor dining there is huge appetite for a better outdoor environment in our urban villages and Dublin city.”

“The public consultation, which had 643 submissions, found that 78% of people felt the trial from summer 2021 improved their experience of the street on the Green.

“In Capel Street, South William Street and now Sandymount Green, the public are way ahead of the incremental change we have seen across the city since the onset of the pandemic.

“The figures for Sandymount of a rise in footfall come as no surprise.

“They are mirrored in the City Centre with car-free streets contributing to a rise of on average 20% in footfall in retail areas.”
