The Labour Party’s Chris O’Dwyer says he welcomes the announcement of €1.4 million from Minister Eamon Ryan and the Department of Transport but is calling on South Dublin County Council to use this money to make greenways more accessible to cyclists, families and those with disabilities.

Speaking following the announcement O’Dwyer said:

“When is funding never welcomed? It is much needed to make improvements to infrastructure but I am calling on South Dublin County Council to use this money and make greenways more accessible for cyclists, families and especially for people with disabilities.

“I have enjoyed walking the canal during lockdown and making use of our greenways but have noticed the great struggle that face families with small children when they try to do the same. The Council appear to be obsessed with barriers and making these amenities accessible to a select few rather than for the entire community.

“We need to accessibility not barriers, we need to make sure that anyone who chooses to or wants to use the greenway can do so with ease.

“I am calling on the County Manager and Councillors to put the money to use in a meaningful way, engage with local residents and those who use mobility aids and wheelchairs to find ways to make greenways across the county accessible.”
