CCTV installed in Mounttown housing estate after spate of dumping

Residents of a Mountown housing estate in south Dublin have been facing the problem of illegal dumping recently – so much so that CCTV has had to be installed at the location.

Fianna Fail councillor for Dun Laoghaire, Justin Moylan tabled a motion to the Dun Laoghaire Area Committee this past week asking the council to “thwart the regular illegal dumping”.

Moylan says that the problem has been persisting since April of last year.

“The background to the motion is due to a persistent problem of illegal dumping at a spot around the Mountown area,” he told Southside People.

“A constituent has been in contact on a regular basis since April 2020 due to this issue and has reported it on many occasions to the council.

“The refuse attracts vermin and foxes which tear the bags apart and make the situation worse.

“It’s not just a dumping issue, attracting vermin brings a health and safety aspect to the problem and raises concerns in relation to children playing around the area.

“The person who has raised this often cleans up the scattered rubbish and repacks it for DLR’s cleansing department to collect. However, at this stage I believe more needs to be done to solve the problem.”

Moylan says that the local authority has ramped up its efforts in trying to stop the illegal dumping of the rubbish in recent weeks.

“To be fair to DLRCoCo it has been working on the problem, but it is very difficult to resolve unless it can catch the culprit.

“In response to the motion DLR have stated that CCTV and signage is provided in this area.

“The litter warden continues to monitor it on regular basis and requests are then sent to the cleansing section to remove any dumped waste as soon as possible.

“The Parks Department have added this area to their works programme for future pruning to allow for more visibility of the area.”

Moylan says even though it will be difficult to identify the culprit, or culprits involved, he is hopeful the offending party will be caught.

“It is good that the CCTV and monitoring are provided however it may still be very difficult to identify the responsible party.

“I believe the Parks department adding the area to their pruning works programme will assist in ending this issue.

“Living through the current Covid -19 restrictions is difficult enough without having someone else’s refuse dumped beside your home, I hope the issue is brough to a conclusion shortly.”
