South Dublin County Council announced at last night’s monthly meeting it has committed over €1m to small public realm works across the county.

The local authority also revealed that €227,321.94 will be made available to community grants.

The area chairperson of the Palmerstown-Lucan-North Clondalkin committee, Independent councillor Alan Hayes said the funding is much-needed.

“It is vital that members of the public and local businesses see tangible projects being funded, and, that they are initiatives that the public have asked for.

“This is local democracy in action.

“For example, the maximum funding of €5000 allocated to Order of Malta – Palmerstown Unit ensures that they can continue to provide a community response during the Covid pandemic and particularly at a time when regular fundraising efforts are diminished”

Hayes says that protection and potential use of built heritage in the county should be made a priority with the funding.

“I believe there is more chance, now more than ever before, to address the built heritage of Palmerstown as a gateway to the county.

“Within one mile we link Fingal County Council, Dublin City Council and South Dublin County Council.

“With the Lucan Village enhancement works gone to architect design stage to promote the area as a tourist destination, the need to link Palmerstown and Lucan and display our shared industrial heritage and tourism potential for the County is vital”.
