Esker Boxing Club being considered for Lucan Leisure Centre

Esker Boxing Club is being considered as a tenant for the soon-to-be refurbished Lucan Leisure Centre, South Dublin County Council has revealed.

At a recent Lucan/Palmerstown/North Clondalkin Area Committee, local Independent councillor Liona O’Toole asked the chief executive if the club is being considered for the centre.

In response, the council said: “The existing Lucan Leisure Centre requires considerable roof repairs and associated works and arrangements are being made to procure and schedule the necessary works which will ensure that the centre will complement the new adjacent swimming pool that is currently under construction.

“An assessment of potential options for the future usage of the complex will be undertaken, in consultation with centre management, which will include the potential for tenant partners.

“The long-standing interest of Esker Boxing Club in this regard will be part of the assessment.”

The council said that the works proposed to the “existing centre include re-roofing and associated insulation works to address ongoing roof leaks that have been repaired almost annually in recent years.”

The council said that an entire new roof is now needed as the existing one has “reached the end of its life span.”

However, there has been no timeline given for when these works will be completed as the council said they “will be subject to procurement and contractor availability.”

Established in 2011, Esker Boxing Club has been seeking a permanent home since it first opened its doors.

Last year the local authority committed to “providing a suitable long-term location for Esker Boxing Club”.

At the time, the council said it was “fully aware of both Esker Boxing Club’s circumstances and their future requirements”.

The chief executive said: “I am exploring what potential options are available to support them in achieving a permanent home for the club.

“I appreciate that they are anxious to secure their future and I will be happy to meet with them when I have something additional and tangible to discuss with them”.

After the recent area committee meeting, O’Toole said she “commended Esker Boxing Club at today’s area committee meeting for their determination and hard work keeping the club on the agenda and ensuring ALL councillors work together on their efforts to secure a permanent home.

“We are not there yet but with their continued pressure on us all we should get there.”
