Meadowbrook swimming pool due to reopen early next year

Repair works on the two swimming pools at Meadowbrook Leisure Centre in Ballinteer are progressing, after they were closed back in February due to damage.

In a statement released online, the leisure centre, which is ran by DLR Leisure, said that “this week saw the pool wall tiles completed on both the pools.

“The next steps are more the unseen visible actions, such as grouting, that require a lot of time to apply and also required drying time periods.

“We will keep you updated on progress next week.”

In a previous statement earlier this month, the leisure centre said: “this week has seen the commencement of the laying of the new pools tiles to the floor of the two pool tanks.

“The meticulous work and attention to fine detail by All Star Tiling is a credit to their crew of workers.

“Finally, we are delighted to have our gym back open and see so many familiar faces again.”

The large pool in the centre was closed after an incident took place which resulted in tiles falling off its walls while it is understood the smaller pool closed late last year.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic repairs on the damages were delayed with works only commencing in early November.

The tiles on the walls and floor of the pool were completely removed with the pool being completely stripped back to its concrete base.

Labour councillor for Dundrum Peter O’Brien said that the work is expected to take 12 weeks to complete.

“Add in a break for Christmas/New Year, both pools will be open to the public late January early February,” he says.

At March’s Dundrum Area Committee, a motion was unanimously passed asking the council to prioritise the reopening of the facility.

The motion read: “This Area Committee expresses its deep concern at the closing of the swimming pool at DLR Leisure Meadowbrook on February, Tuesday 25.

“It calls on the council and DLR Leisure Services to prioritise the reopening of both pools in DLR Leisure Meadowbrook and that the necessary tenders be sought immediately to complete the works.”

Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and DLR Leisure apologised for the inconvenience of the pools’ closure and said it would be reopened at the earliest possible date.
