Leas Chathaoirleach, Cllr Deirdre Donnelly, cuts the red tape on the new extension to Shangannagh House, Shankill.

A SINGLE-storey extension, to be called the Caroline McDermott Room, has officially opened at Shanganagh Park House.

The extension will provide additional space and allow for Shanganagh Park House to increase the services provided from this community facility.

The funding for the extension provided by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council was partially provided from the Community Gain element of the upgrade of Shanganagh Bray Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Shanganagh Park House is situated in the centre of the local community and provides an impressive range of activities for all age groups which includes the provision of early years childcare services, an afterschool programme, Crosscare Youth Services, Adult Education and the senior citizens ‘Recycled Teenagers’ group.

Caroline McDermott lived in the Rathsallagh area for over 40 years and was a leading member of the community.

She was instrumental in developing and managing the many activities and services which are provided from Shanganagh Park House.

Speaking at the official opening, Leas Chathaoirleach, Cllr Deirdre Donnelly, said: “This extension will provide increased space at Shanganagh Park House to meet the needs of the local community, therefore increasing the wellbeing of the Shanganagh / Rathsallagh community through supporting community engagement, volunteerism and active citizenship with particular emphasis on providing services for the local youth population.

“The provision by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council of this newly built extension and related community and social supports in Shanganagh Park House increases opportunities for people to play an active part in their local community and enjoy activities and social interaction in their local area.”

Also present at the opening were invited guests including the staff and management of Shanganagh Park House and local people who avail of the facilities and services of the community facility, members of the McDermott family, TDs, as well as council staff.
