FG councillor John Bailey is laid to rest

THE funeral of John Bailey, one of the longest serving councillors on Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, took place last week.

Cllr Bailey passed away on July 9, at home with his family by his side.

He was the “beloved husband of Angela, loving father of Suzanne, Elaine, Maria, Joanna and Allison,” a notice on RIP.ie reads.

“Sadly missed by his wife, daughters, sons-in-law Vincent, Ronan, Jim, Hugh and Bryan, his much adored 13 grandchildren, extended family especially Marie, Annie and Susie, his colleagues and a wide circle of friends.”

Cllr Bailey’s funeral took place on Saturday after requiem Mass followed by burial in DeansGrange Cemetery.

In a statement last week Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council led the tributes to the long-standing councillor.

“Councillor Bailey was one of the council’s longest serving elected members, having been elected to serve originally 15 years ago, topping the poll in Dún Laoghaire in 2004,” the council stated.

“He served on three councils following his re-election in the May Local Elections this year.

“Councillor Bailey also served with distinction as Cathaoirleach of the council from 2011 – 2012. 

“Councillor Bailey was born and reared in Dalkey and was deeply connected with the people of the area, with family links going back generations.

“He played an active role in business and commerce in the local area for many years as an owner of a number of business interests.”

The council added that a longtime member of the Cuala GAA Club, Cllr Bailey was deeply involved in Dublin GAA, serving 10 years as Chairman of the Dublin GAA County Board.

“During his tenure he promoted significant investment in promoting juvenile participation in sport,” the council added.

Cathaoirleach, Cllr Shay Brennan, said: “It was with sadness that I heard the news of John’s passing.

“He was one of the most committed and hard working people to represent the citizens of Dún Laoghaire and he did so with great distinction.

“He had vast experience which shone through in the Council Chamber.

“One of his many interests was in Gaelic games where he was integrally involved in Dublin GAA and he supported it with great passion and enthusiasm.”
