ONE of the largest sports events of its kind in Ireland took place in Kilbogget Park, Cabinteely, recently when more than 32 clubs, 107 teams and over 1,600 players took part in over 400 games at the annual Seapoint RC Blitz.

The event attracted teams from all over the country and even from Wales, for a day of rucking, passing and tackling.

Boys and girls from U10s, U11s, and U12s played in a series of matches across 23 pitches against 24 fellow Leinster clubs, four clubs from Munster, one from Connacht and two from Ulster.

This year they were joined by two teams from Caerphilly in Wales, and watched on by their Leinster heroes, props Ed Byrne and Andrew Porter who came along to lend their support.

Commenting on the day Seapoint RC President, Stephen McDonough said: “The Seapoint RC Blitz is a fantastic, annual event which has been running in our club for 39 years, showcasing the rugby skills of the hundreds of boys and girls who take part.

“I am personally so appreciative of everyone who ensures that the event runs smoothly year after year, and I look forward to celebrating our 40th Blitz in 2020.”

A committee of over 120 volunteers schedule the matches and coordinate on the day as well as arrange an array of family fun activities

Sponsors include Kingspan, DLRCC, Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel and the IRFU.
