Press photographers’ work features in new exhibition

A STUNNING collection of 107 winning and shortlisted images from the annual awards of the Press Photographers Association of Ireland have gone on display in dlr LexIcon.

The ‘Press Photographer of the Year 2018’ exhibition was officially launched on July 3 by The cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Cllr Ossian Smyth.

Also, in attendance was Robbie Reynolds, President of the Press Photographers Association of Ireland, Cyril Byrne, photographer with The Irish Times and ‘Press Photographer of the Year’ 2018, Minister Mary Mitchell O’Connor and Leas-Chathaoirleach Mary Fayne.

The opening reception was hosted by Dr Marian Keyes, Senior Executive Librarian, dlr LexIcon, and was attended by locals, friends of the library and members of the PPAI.

The overall award of ‘Press Photographer of the Year’ 2018 is Cyril Byrne, of The Irish Times. The exhibition features images across nine categories including news, daily life & people, nature & the environment, politics, sports action, sports feature, portrait, art & entertainment and reportage, alongside a dedicated award for multimedia.

The exhibition runs until mid August in the DLR Lexicon and entry is free.

This year’s awards judging panel was chaired by Dermot O’Shea and the judges were internationally renowned photographers Tom Stoddart and Eamonn McCabe.

The multimedia award was judged by Michael Lee, RTÉ cameraman and Philip Bromwell, RTÉ News video and mobile journalist.

Commenting on the portfolio of the ‘Press Photographer of the Year’ 2018, Cyril Byrne, the judges said: “This portfolio comprehensively shows the ability and imagination of the photographer over a wide range of subjects and situations.

“The judges felt that the photographer displayed an incredible ability over the many disciplines and facets of press photography.”
