A proud day for Drimnagh school

OUR Lady of Good Counsel Boys’ National School on Mourne Road in Drimnagh was awarded its first Active Schools flag last week. 

On what was a proud day for the school, staff, students, parents and the board of management watched local Olympic gold medal winner and local hero, Michael Carruth, raise the blue flag for the first time.

The whole school community has worked hard for over a year to get this highly sought-after award. The flag is awarded to schools that increase physical activity, physical education and partnerships with local and national sporting organisations. 

The school increased physical activity in students through initiatives such as Movement Mondays, a running club, Wake Up Wednesday, Football Free Friday, Active Lines and PE homework. 

The school was highly commended for its initiatives, with the accreditor noting the many activities going on in the school and how engaged all the staff, students and parents were in the process.
