Tallaght Stadium set for new stand as work gets underway

CONSTRUCTION of the new South Stand at Tallaght Stadium got underway last week with a sod-turning event attended by the Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr Paul Gogarty.

With the building contractor, ABM Ltd now on site it is expected that the new single-tier structure, with 2,183 spectator seats, will be completed by the end of September of this year.

South Dublin County Council said it was delighted that the stadium is being expanded as it will also lead to improved spectator facilities.

The capacity of the stadium will be over 8,000 seats once the stand is completed.

However, Local Fianna Fail Councillor, Charlie O’Connor, has sought assurances from the council regarding the potential for disruption to events at Tallaght Stadium as expansion works get underway.

Cllr O’Connor said he raised the matter with the Chief Executive of South Dublin County Council at the March meeting of the Tallaght Area Committee.

 “The construction of the new South Stand at Tallaght Stadium, which will allow for an additional 2,183 seats, is highly anticipated,” he said.

“This expansion is something I have campaigned for to date and it will be a very welcome addition to the area this September.

“As is the case with any construction of this scale we must expect a certain degree of disruption.

“However, I have appealed to council officials to ensure that there will be measures put in place so that events being held at the stadium will not be affected.

“The multipurpose stadium in Tallaght hosts a range of community, regional and national events and its wonderful facilities make it a popular venue for activities,” Cllr O’Connor added.

“I would not like to see any of these events affected or postponed due to the works.

“Health and Safety standards while carrying out the development are of the utmost importance.

“But I have also been assured by council officals that these, of course, will be met and monitored very closely as the work continues over the course of the year.”
