Sallynoggin hosts Christmas lunch for the elderly

THE community of Sallynoggin came together just before Christmas to throw a party for the elderly.

The Community Christmas Party is in its fifth year and the Christmas lunch is held for all of those living alone in the area.

As in previous years, it was held in S Joseph’s Football Club's ‘Café 53’ and is organised by local volunteers.

The annual community  event aims to bring old and new neighbours together to socialise in advance of Christmas. 

Speaking after the event, organiser Suzanne Butler said: "People living alone love a day out, particularly at this time of year when it can be very lonely and isolating.

“We take time out to call to these vulnerable people who may be alone and just need a friendly face to chat to.

“We hold a Christmas lunch with food, music and laughter to show people we care and that we are there.”

Suzanne thanked St Joseph's Football Club and local businesses for their support.

Local Councillor, Cormac Devlin said "Everyone that attended had a wonderful time. It is truly a community event, organised for the community, by the community. It is lovely to see our elderly residents being recognised in this way because, in their day, they would have hosted similar events and it’s up to our generation now to look after them and entertain them". 

Congratulating the volunteers, Cllr. Devlin said "I want to commend and thank all of the many volunteers that gave of their time to organise this event, especially Suzanne Butler, Rionagh Walsh, George Forsyth and many others that volunteered on the day or donated prizes. It shows that Sallynoggin's community spirit is still very much alive and well."
