Council rolls out new 30kmh speed limits

DUN Laoghaire Rathdown County Council is rolling out a new, special 30 kilometres per hour speed limit in residential areas.

Earlier this year, the council undertook a review of the speed limits in residential estates in accordance with the 2015 Guidelines for Setting and Managing Speed Limits.

A comprehensive assessment of roads was carried out looking at the nature of various routes, taking into consideration width, layout, collision data, vehicle speeds, and areas with vulnerable road users.

The result of this assessment was to identify a number of residential areas in which to implement a special 30 kilometres per hour speed limit.

“The intention of this special speed limit is for drivers to slow down in residential estates,” Deputy Josepha Madigan (FG) said. “This will help make our residential roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly children and the elderly.

“This new speed limit will be particularly important for estates currently being used as rat runs by drivers to avoid traffic on the main roads. I have been contacted by a number of concerned residents worried about the safety of their children while vehicles speedily cut through their estates.

“I hope that these new speed restrictions will help in making our roads safer for all residents.”
