IRISH boxing legend Michael Carruth was on the Southside last week where he cut the red tape on a new boxing club in Ringsend.

The Olympic gold medallist was attending the official opening of ‘The Ringer’ Boxing Club that has been launched for young fighters from the area.

The Ringsend and Irishtown Community Centre (RICC) said they were delighted to have Carruth on board.

He will be the official patron of the club and will be actively involved in making the club a success.

“The Ringer Boxing Club was founded to create an environment focused primarily for young people, where sportsmanship, fair play, physical conditioning and social inclusion are the key elements used to promote the healthy mental, spiritual and emotional well-being of each member,” the club stated.

“It is an initiative that aims to support those at risk and is operated under strict principles. Registration is currently open for members.”

The Ringer will be the first boxing club in the area in over 20 years. Initially catering for young people, The Ringer has already enrolled over 60 local children and classes will commence in May.

The club is also implementing a programme for local people who will have the opportunity to train as coaches as the club will be a member of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA).

Speaking at the launch, patron Michael Carruth said: “I’m really excited to be on board The Ringer Boxing Club project.

“Who knows, maybe there’s a champion already in the community.”

The whole project has been a locally devised initiative, right down to the logo, where local schools were asked to contribute to the design.
