Aware announces weekly support group in Blackrock

THE national organisation Aware has opened a new weekly support group in Blackrock.

Launched late last month, the group is suitable for people who experience depression or bipolar disorder.

The group, which is free to attend with no referral or booking needed, meets every Thursday at 7.30pm in Avila House on Sweetman’s Avenue.

Aware say their support groups help people to manage their experience of depression or bipolar disorder and minimise the impact it has on their life and relationships.

Bríd O’Meara, Director of Services with Aware, said that the support groups can make a real difference for many people.

“Every single week we provide 39 groups across the country and we get the most incredible feedback from many people who attend,” she revealed.

“It can be hugely helpful to be reminded that others understand what you are going through, and to also be reminded of practical tips and skills that can help.

“While people can be reluctant to walk into a support group for the first time, those who do attend are often very pleasantly surprised at how helpful they find the meetings.

“Sometimes there is a fear that the support meeting will be all ‘doom and gloom’ or that it will make you feel worse than you already do. But the reality is that there’s lots to be learned at the Aware support groups and they can be very life-affirming.”

In 2015, Aware support groups across the country received over 11,550 visits. In addition to the new Blackrock group, Aware also offers support groups in several other locations in Dublin city and county.

The organisation also provides ‘Support Line’ and ‘Support Mail’ services (1800804848/supportmail@aware.ie) which are available to individuals managing depression or bipolar disorder, as well as to people who are concerned about a loved one.

More information and full details about Aware’s services, including its Life Skills programmes which are based on cognitive behavioural therapy, is available on aware.ie
