Choral society to hit all the high notes

Dublin People 05 Nov 2016
Martin Cuppage and Fintan Lalor of the Dún Laoghaire Choral Society get in some practice.

THE Dun Laoghaire Choral Society has announced an exciting and ambitious new project.

Run in conjunction with David Brophy, Audrey Corbett and The Galway Baroque Singers, ‘Choral Fusion’ is an unprecedented Double Choir Series that unites these two fine ensembles which hail from opposite sides of the country.

It will span 18 months and see each of five concerts performed in Dublin and Galway on consecutive weekends. It’s a massive undertaking that will feature the most exhilarating and challenging double choir repertoire.

And the small orchestral jewel that is The Fishamble Sinfonia will provide the glorious orchestral bed into which will leap DLCS, The Galway Baroque Singers and a host of wonderful up and coming soloists.

The first set of concerts will take place at 8pm on Saturday, November 12 in St Ann’s Church on Dawson Street, and on Saturday, November 19 in Galway.

Handel’s sumptuous ‘Solomon’ will be performed. Universally recognised as one of Handel’s finest masterpieces, it features magnificent choruses, rapturous love music, gripping emotion and stunning imagery from nature and of course the vividly portrayed dramatic scene of Solomon’s famous judgment over the disputed infant.

Next year will be a busy one with three Choral Fusion concerts starting in March, (with works by Lully and Charpentier), then in June, (featuring Vivaldi) and again in November (with works from Bach and Haydn).

The penultimate concert will take place in March 2018 when they return to Handel with the wonderful ‘Israel in Egypt’.

Tickets are available at www.eventbrite.ie/doublechoirseries, or at the door.
