The 10 best Southside pubs to watch Euro 2016

Southside soccer fans watch Ireland in action against Sweden in the George Bernard Shaw

With Ireland’s Euro 2016 campaign well underway, anticipation is building ahead of our next stop on (hopefully) the road to glory. The whole country is watching the boys in their bid to make history. But if you can’t join the Green Army in France, we’ve compiled our Top 10 bars on the Southside where you can catch all the action.

1. The Bleedin’ Horse on Camden Street always makes it onto these kinds of lists. Its beer garden is just about grand but it’s the numerous TVs dotted around its various nooks and crannies that allow for various options to watch a game from almost any angle that makes it a top draw in this part of town.

2. Just up the road is The Barge where again a few screens dotted around inside ensure that you should be able to catch the action even if you arrive late. But, even better, when you want to cool off after a heady night of soccer action, it has one of the best outdoor drinking spots in Dublin, right on the canal!

3. A city centre favourite and hardy a big secret is Sinnott’s at St Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre. Hugely popular with the after work crowd, the big screens and several smaller TVs guarantee some great crowd action and is a firm favourite with busy RTE crews looking to capture the atmosphere of the games.

4. The 51 on Haddington Road is arguably better known as a rugby pub as the crowds making their way to the Aviva up the road often pack the place out. But I’m told that they are showing all the Euro games here over the next couple of weeks.

5. Another local favourite in the environs of the Aviva is the Bath Pub, just down the road. Nicely hidden away on Bath Avenue, it includes a spacious interior, great staff and a couple of nice big screens where you can get stuck into all the action.

6. Keeping it in Dublin 4, Slattery’s has just got to be included here. Another big rugby pub, it always gets rammed when Ireland are playing up the road, But with several screens inside as well as a couple more outside in the smoking area/beer garden, it’s always a safe bet.

7. The bar under Dundrum Shopping Centre. I know, a bar in a shopping centre. I wasn’t convinced either but with a few strategically placed screens, a dedicated fan base, great chicken wings, excellent service and an outdoor terrace, Winters is ahead of some of its better known rivals.

8. I haven’t been myself but I’m reliably informed that that the Coach House in Ballinteer, a very popular suburban bar in this part of the Southside, is a great spot for watching games – and the food is meant to be top notch too!

9. Another great suburban bar is the Goat Grill in Goatstown. A sprawling maze, it has several screens in various parts of the bar and lounge and always attracts a passionate local crowd.

10. And my own personal favourite… The George Bernard Shaw on Richmond Street, just off the South Circular Road. The fact that it is a little bit under the radar when it comes to sports watching means that there is always a good spot to grab out the back in the beer garden where they have one big screen and a smaller TV to the side. As well as great pizza and craft beers, it attracts fans from other participating countries. It was pretty busy on Ireland’s opening night as Italians flocked in to cheer on their team as they took on Belgium.
