A STUDENT of St Mac Dara’s Community College in Templeogue has been named as an ambassador for WWF Earth Hour, which takes place this Saturday.

On Saturday March 19, at 8:30pm, Louise Maguire will do the same as millions of others around the world and switch off the lights for one hour.

It’s all part of Earth Hour – a worldwide grassroots movement aimed at uniting people to show they care about the future of our planet.

The hour is intended to give publicity to the issues facing the plane, and switching off the lights is a powerful symbol what Earth Hour is trying to achieve.

Louise is proud of her achievement, and excited at being involved.

“Earth Hour is a simple but highly effective way to show you care about the planet while highlighting how small individual lifestyle changes can make a big difference to our environment,” she says.

“People’s lives are so busy, we don’t often think about the negative impact we have on the environment.

“We, as citizens, have a duty to leave the Earth the way we found it, so that future generations can thrive.”

Louise will be switching off her lights for an hour and hosting a candlelit dinner for family and friends to raise funds for WWF. “Earth Hour is also a lot of fun – especially when you get creative with your friends and family,” she adds.

Louise is encouraging her local community to follow her example and host a local pub quiz or candlelit dinner.

WWF’s Earth Hour has been running for the past ten years. In 2015, 172 countries took part.

Famous buildings including London’s Big Ben, Hong Kong’s skyline and Sydney Harbour Bridge have also participated by shutting off their lights.

Even places that are famous for their bright lights, such as Times Square in New York City and the Las Vegas strip, shut off for an hour!

Tracey Spensley, a spokesperson for WWF said: “Louise’s efforts are truly inspiring and it’s an honour to recognise her as a WWF Earth Hour ambassador.

“We hope that Louise’s local community will feel inspired to get involved and show they care about the future of our planet this Earth Hour.”

Everyone is encouraged to join in the celebrations for WWF’s Earth Hour on March 19. You can visit wwf.org.uk/earthhour for more information and details on how to sign up.
