Dublin football manager receives council’s highest civic honour

DUBLIN Senior Football Manager, Jim Gavin, was awarded the Freedom of South Dublin County at a civic ceremony in County Hall, Tallaght last week.

Mr Gavin, was awarded the council’s highest civic honour at a ceremony hosted by the Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr Sarah Holland, on the evening of Monday, February 8.

He was honoured for his contribution to the development and promotion of Gaelic football.

He was also recognised for his achievement in leading the Dublin Senior Football Team to All-Ireland success twice in the last three years.

The decision to hold a ceremony to honour the Dublin manager was agreed unanimously by the elected members of the council at the monthly meeting held in December.

Originally from Clondalkin, Jim attended Clonburris National School and Moyle Park College. He has enjoyed a very successful career in the Defence Forces and with the Air Corps and the Irish Aviation Authority.

Mayor Holland said she was delighted to be honouring Jim.

“The reason I supported the nomination of this person is not only because of the fact that he has achieved astonishing sporting success both as a player and a manager, but because he is an outstanding role model for the young people of South Dublin County,” she said.

Mr Gavin was accompanied to the conferral and civic reception by his wife and children, his parents and brothers and sisters.

Other guests included local councillors as well as representatives from the Dublin County Board and local GAA clubs based in South Dublin County.
