Protest this Saturday over Dun Laoghaire cruise berth plan

A PUBLIC protest will be held on Saturday to voice local concerns about a controversial cruise berth planning application for Dún Laoghaire Harbour.

An Bord Pleanála has granted an oral hearing into the €18m plan and will hold a preliminary meeting tomorrow.

As it’s considered to be a strategic infrastructure project, the application went straight to An Bod Pleanála instead of through the normal local authority planning process. It’s understood that over 150 submissions on the plan were received by the board.

The protest on Saturday, which has been organised by the Save Our Seafront (SOS) group, will start at 1pm at The People’s Park.

People Before Profit TD and chair of Save Our Seafront, Richard Boyd Barrett, will speak at the rally and will be presenting his group’s submission at An Bord Pleanála’s hearing. He also intends to raise the issue in the Dáil in the coming weeks.

As reported recently in Southside People, folk singer Christy Moore, who lives in Monkstown, has joined the chorus of opposition to the cruise berth plan. He has contributed to a document prepared by the SOS group which outlines alternative options for Dún Laoghaire Harbour.
