Call for action over waste linked to Finglas bonfires

A local TD has called for urgent action against businesses accused of failing to secure waste that is being used to fuel dangerous bonfires in north Finglas.

Dublin North West TD Paul McAuliffe said pallets and other wooden packaging are being left unsecured outside premises in a nearby industrial estate.

The Fianna Fáil representative has written to Fingal County Council warning that the materials are being taken and used in bonfires, causing damage to public spaces in the area.

Deputy McAuliffe said businesses have responsibilities under waste management legislation to ensure their waste is stored securely.

He has asked the council to contact every business in the industrial estate and use its enforcement powers where necessary.

“Recently, there have been a number of dangerous bonfires in parts of north Finglas that have been fuelled by unsecured waste from businesses in a nearby industrial estate,” Deputy McAuliffe said.

“The fires are damaging the surrounding area and have destroyed areas of a public park that should be there for local families to enjoy.

“Businesses have a responsibility to ensure that their waste is secure, and Fingal County Council also has an obligation to enforce this measure.

“I have written to the local authority to urge that enforcement take place as a matter of urgency, especially given the time of year and proximity to Halloween.”

Deputy McAuliffe said previous collaboration between local authorities and gardaí had helped reduce the number of fires.

“In previous years, the joint collaboration between Dublin City Council, Fingal County Council and An Garda Síochána has resulted in a reduction in fires,” he said.

“We now need to see the same approach this year, as fires have started even earlier than expected.”
