Griffith Avenue Mile announced as Ireland’s National 1 Mile Road Championship

The Griffith Avenue Mile has been designated as the official Athletics Ireland National 1 Mile Road Championship 2026, organisers confirmed today as entries opened for the sixth running of Dublin’s premier one-mile road race.

Taking place on Sunday, 20th September at 3pm on Griffith Avenue, Marino, the 2026 event will for the first time see the winners of the senior men’s and women’s chip-timed race crowned Irish National 1 Mile Road Champions.

Organised by Marino Athletics Club in association with Athletics Ireland, and proudly supported by Dublin City University and Dublin City Council Sport & Wellbeing Partnership, the championship designation marks a significant milestone for an event that has grown steadily since its revival in 2019.

Fionnuala Keane, Griffith Avenue Mile Race Director said:

“Securing National Championship status is the biggest step forward in the history of this event. The Griffith Avenue Mile has always attracted serious competitive talent alongside thousands of community runners, and now it offers elite athletes the chance to compete for national honours on one of Ireland’s most unique race courses. We expect this to be our strongest field yet.”

The unique appeal of the race is that the championship and the community event are one and the same: club athletes chasing national medals line up on the same course as first-timers, families, and masters runners on the same closed stretch of Griffith Avenue. Every finisher receives a commemorative medal, and a post-race festival takes place at DCU All Hallows Campus on Grace Park Road.

Eamonn Coghlan, who has served as Race Ambassador since the event’s revival in 2019, welcomed the championship announcement:

“The mile is the most storied distance in athletics and Ireland has produced some of the world’s greatest milers. Having a dedicated National 1 Mile Road Championship is long overdue, and Griffith Avenue, which is straight, fast, and closed to traffic is the perfect, venue for it. I’m proud to have been part of this race from the beginning and I’m looking forward to watching the best milers in Ireland go head to head in September.”
