DCU appoints Cathal Marley as new Chancellor

Dublin City University has named Cathal Marley, a distinguished energy executive and DCU alumnus, as its new Chancellor.
Marley, who hails from Donegal, currently serves as Chief Executive of EirGrid Group, the state agency responsible for managing and developing Ireland’s electricity grid.
Appointed to that post in April 2025, he has played a key role in driving the transition to renewable energy as part of Ireland’s climate goals.
With more than 25 years’ experience in utilities and infrastructure, Marley previously led Ervia and chaired Irish Water.
He has held senior roles across the electricity, water, and gas sectors, and has earned a reputation as a determined advocate for sustainability and public service.
His links with DCU run deep. A graduate of the university, Marley has served as Deputy Chairperson of the Governing Authority and Chair of the Audit Committee.
He has been a member of the Audit Committee since 2016. Outside of DCU, he is also currently Chairperson of Swim Ireland, reflecting his longstanding interest in sport and community service.
DCU President Professor Dáire Keogh welcomed the appointment, describing Marley as “a leader of energy and integrity” who “understands the unique character, contribution, and responsibilities of DCU to Irish society.”
“Cathal has a distinguished record of leadership, governance, and service, while his commitment to sustainable and renewable energy at a pivotal time for the country is exemplary,” said Professor Keogh.
The role of Chancellor involves leading DCU’s Governing Authority, overseeing strategy and governance, and acting as an ambassador for the university.
It also includes ceremonial duties such as presiding over graduation ceremonies.
Speaking after his appointment was confirmed at the first meeting of DCU’s new Governing Authority, Marley said: “Even as Ireland’s higher education sector faces a set of challenging circumstances, it continues to make a significant contribution to the country’s success.
“I have seen first-hand the impact of DCU’s teaching and research on our stakeholders and on issues of global concern.”
He added: “I would like to thank the President and Governing Authority of DCU for this honour, and I look forward to working with the DCU community as we strive to be a leading innovative European university.”
Marley succeeds Brid Horan, who served two terms on the Governing Authority and held the role of Chancellor since 2021.
Professor Keogh paid tribute to Horan’s “outstanding commitment and leadership” over the past four years.
