DCU SU calls on North Dublin Community to Rent a Room to students

Dublin City University’s Students’ Union have launched their annual Rent a Room campaign, asking homeowners near the university’s campuses in Glasnevin and Drumcondra to consider renting a room to a student for the upcoming 2025/26 academic year.

Homeowners can earn up to €850 per month tax free. Social Welfare benefits are not affected.

The Students’ Union is holding three clinics in July for prospective hosts.

Glasnevin campus: Monday 14 July, 7pm

St Patrick’s campus: Tuesday 15 July, 12pm

Online: Tuesday 22 July, 7pm

You can find out more about those clinics on the DCU Office of Student Life website.

Speaking about the Rent a Room campaign, DCU SU President Shane Murphy said:

“It is no secret that affordable student accommodation is as rare as a blue rose. Dublin City University, and the Students’ Union, pride ourselves on being community driven institutions – and we are calling on our local community to lend a helping hand to students and their families in need.

“You are very much a part of Dublin City University – and something as simple as offering up a spare bedroom would go a long way to making DCU a university that continues to be accessible and affordable to all.”

Vice-President for Community & Citizenship Emily Cathcart said

“The DCU Students’ Union are contacted every day by students who cannot find somewhere to live, and are facing financial difficulty and impacts on their mental health.

“Empty promises and a lack of action by current and past governments has left our students without affordable accommodation and without options.

“I urge all local residents with a room to spare to consider offering it to a DCU student; it could be the difference between a student having a place to live and thrive, or having to drop out of education altogether.”
